In 1967 Timothy Leary was invited to speak at Toronto University during a multimedia exposition of psychedelic arts and culture entitled Perceptions 67. He was denied entry into Canada by border officials. His planned speech was later recorded and smuggled to the Canadian underground press. This edition contains the entire text of the banned speech. In 1970 Dr. Leary escaped from a California state prison with the assistance of the Weather Underground, a clandestine revolutionary organization. The P.O.W. Communiqué is a statement written immediately before the daring escape, carried over the wall and released to the US underground and dissident press, where it was widely reprinted. It is a searing indictment of Nixon-era American neofascism, and, like the writings of Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine, a call to arms in defense of liberty.
